LaMATS is pleased to assist the Louisiana Department of Revenue in alerting LMA members of its debt collection service, available statewide without contract or fees to any local government looking to recoup lost revenue from unpaid bills and fines.

"Anything that is owed a municipality can be collected," said Brett Poirrier, Director of the Department of Revenue's Office of Debt Recovery, who addressed attendees at the LaMATS breakout session during LMA's 88th Annual Convention.

Poirrier reports that in the past year, unpaid water and sewer bills were among the most sought-after municipal revenue recoveries. Parking tickets, non-automated speeding fines, and employee overpayments are also commonly recovered for local governments by his office.

To contact Director Poirrier, or to inquire about available services, call 225.219.2671 or email brett.poirrier@la.gov.

Paying a mortgage with a credit card isn’t as simple as swiping and walking away with rewards points. Lenders usually won’t take card payments directly because of processing fees and risk issues, which means you’d need a third-party service to route the payment for you. That sounds convenient until the service fee wipes out any cashback or miles you were hoping to earn. It can even hurt your credit utilization if the balance sits too long. There’s a solid breakdown of when it makes sense—and when it’s a financial trap—here: https://consumerattorneys.com/article/can-you-pay-a-mortgage-with-a-credit-card. Worth reading before turning your house payment into revolving debt.
