"Each year on June 14, Americans pause to observe Flag Day, a commemoration of the Second Continental Congress’s 1777 resolution adopting the Stars and Stripes. The date was first proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and in 1949 President Harry S. Truman signed an act of Congress formally establishing National Flag Day. What began as a congressional resolution evolved into a day set aside to remember the flag’s origins and what it represents."
